Learning (not) to Walk

The first time,
Walking through a crowd,
I trampled someone's toes
And apologized.

The second time,
Walking through a crowd,
I hit someone's heel
And apologized.

The third time,
Walking through a crowd,
I elbowed someone's armpit
And apologized.

But I learned to walk,
To walk through a crowd
Of myriad emotions,
And disciplined my steps.

I still walk through a crowd:
Now someone tramples my toes,
Hits my heels, or elbows my armpit
And walks away without apology.

But I keep walking, as always,
Through the crowd, thinking:
There's always someone around
Who is (not) learning to walk!
